Very Happy

Hi everyone. I already really like you.
I've popped into the clan chat a couple times; said hi, asked a few questions, answered a few questions... And just generally loved how friendly and good to each other everyone is. On top of that, you guys actually do things together.
This is going to be my place.
Sooo here's a little background on your newest newbie.

I am completely new to Runescape. I gave the game a whirl in its earliest days as a free browser-based java game because it was something I could mess around with during study hall in the high school library. It was a cool game and I liked it but I never did get far into it because my mmorpg of choice at the time (and still my favorite of all time) was Ultima Online (Atlantic) so at home, that's where my heart was.

Fast forward to now and this awesome old game is available on my badass pocket-computer smart phone while I'm laying in my hammock in my campsite hiding from the COVID. Whoa. (as a side note I also found that remastered versions of Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate II are also available on my little wonder device - it's so good to live in the future!)

So anyway, there I am swinging in my hammock on a brisk morning in the beginning of April 2020 loading up OSRS. I paid for a subscription immediately because life's always better when you're subscribed. Didn't take too long to get sucked in. So I talked to some npcs and learned my way around a little. Did some small quests, killed a ton of goblins and then some rats (but boy the rats were tough).

Mined a little, fished a little, chopped some trees. Picked a bunch of pockets. Consistently ran myself out of stamina. Life was pretty good.
Eventually I started venturing farther abroad, exploring the land and surrounding cities. Wandering north I encountered the city of Varrock and noticed that the bank here was not a far run from the mine. So I emptied my pack of all but my pickaxe and began mining clay because it seemed to be the fastest. After many runs between the mine and the bank I had amassed a fair bit of clay and decided I needed to find a place to sell it. So I set to exploring Varrock (and, holy crap, the blacksmith is close to the bank too!). In my exploration I had the great fortune to find this large gather of people at a place that I soon learned was called the Grand Exchange. Didn't take me long to understand what this was. Conveniently there was a bank right there too so, naturally, I decided to find out how much I could sell my clay for and... wow. Seriously, wow. I just made more money than it felt like I could even use. I mean, up until this point I was getting enjoyment from stacking up 3gp pickpockets which was essentially free money in my opinion. So I made a few more good clay runs and stashed a very happy amount of cash away (50-100k maybe? I don't remember, that was like 3 weeks ago XD).

What to do with all this cash? I had no idea what was good gear (I still don't, at least not for my level). It then occurred to me to see if I could buy some clay for less than I was selling it and... yep. Just wait a few minutes with a lower offer and hell yeah, someone sold low. I sold it back higher. Well that was cool, so rinse and repeat obviously.

I then thought I still wanted to boost some skills so maybe I could buy ores and smelt them then sell the bars back for a profit. Yep. Found the furnace across the bridge to the west too so that was sweet. I got my smithing up pretty good that way and turned a nice little profit.

I stumbled for a sec when I hit iron level until I learned I could get a ring to enable me to smelt the stuff without failing.

I wound up turning the bars into stuff too once I started smelting silver. Can't remember how I figured out that I could make jewelry with it but I just bought the mold on the GE and started cranking out rings. Then I put stones in the rings. All the while, doing the math to make sure my profits were good.

Well I continued to progress in my crafting skills and profit making. I put offers on the GE for very low prices on some of the few items I knew about and just crafted things while I waited to get the notification that someone was selling at my stupid low prices. Then I'd run back with whatever jewelry or bars I had made, sell them, and then sell the items I bought low for a higher price... My money was making itself. Eventually though I got busy in life and couldn't really interact with the game much. So I parked myself at the GE and just bought stuff low and re-sold it for a higher price. Pretty basic items too because I don't really know what's out there except what I've overheard people talking about.

And that's where I've been for the last 3 weeks or so of my first month in OSRS. Chillin' at the GE. I'll probably break 9mil tomorrow... but I otherwise have what amounts to less than 1 week of experience actually playing the game outside of the GE.

I'm going to be done with IRL work soon and be able to actually play the game again and now that I have all this money I figure I could do the whole newbie thing in a really deluxe fashion... like have all the best gear for my level to maximize my training and be able to do the most fun hunts that I'm capable of. Except I don't know anything about what gear is good, or the best ways to train, good places to hunt, etc.

So I did a little searching and found you guys. Listened to your chat and talked a little.
And now I'm kinda hoping you guys would be willing to be my little runescape family and help me learn and grow in the most spectacular and enjoyable way.

I had a wonderful guild in Ultima Online back in the day. For years we were all best friends and did epic hunts and pvp tournaments and roleplayed orcs... every fun thing you could do in that game (which was a LOT).

That's basically what I'm hoping for here.

(Also, anyone willing to take me under your wing to learn how to pvp in this game? - it looks pretty complex but I love that)

Sorry for the novel... I tend to get a little carried away when I write.

TLDR; Total runescape newbie with a decent bankroll seeking friends to show me the ropes and do fun stuff with.

Welcome to the clan! That was quite a pleasant read and it's clear you're going to fit in quite well here. It's VERY rare you find someone with almost 0 runescape experience so you might expect to find some people calling you out for pretending to be a newer player taking advantage of our clan for donations. Just ignore these people, it does happen pretty often. But you seem genuine and want to fit in with the clan which is all we ask! Hope to see you more around the cc and don't hesitate to ask anything at all =)

For someone new to the game, you are actually doing better than most.
Little fun fact: When you reach 10mil GP, your cash stack turns green instead of white Wink Which is usually the place you can consider yourself rich Very Happy

We are an advice/social/event/anything clan chat, so don't be afraid of asking what you would consider stupid questions, you are not the first new person to Runescape, and pretty much everyone don't mind taking the time to help people learning the game like you Smile

The only warning I would give is to not ask a broad question, because then you may get a spam like ton of answers, of course all of them wants to help, but can be a bit overwhelming to begin with, so for your own sake try to ask one question at a time.

Like instead of asking: "What's the best armour?" ask "I am Lvl 15 defense, what armour should I wear now?"

In the first question you will most likely get told about all the armour and asked if you wanna use magic, ranged or melee, and as a new player, that can already make the situation overwhelming, while in the 2nd question you will get an exact answer for your situation Very Happy

Anyways, I hope that you get a sense of belonging in the Clan, and that we live up to your expactations Smile
See you ingame! Very Happy  bounce  bounce

Sooo here's a little background on your newest newbie.
a little background
little

This is literally the longest intro I've ever seen on the offsite, haha. Certainly not a bad thing, mind you! But this is gonna take some time to unpack Laughing Shows real dedication, though! I can already tell you're going to fit in well here Pepo Hugs

I don't know a ton about Ultima Online, but I remember seeing this video a while back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFNxJVTJleE That really piqued my interest. Some about complex in-game economies and environments really appeals to me, for whatever reason. I think that's what originally got me into Dwarf Fortress back in the day. The fact that every decision you make, however small, can have larger, lasting implications in the wider world is incredibly fascinating. It's also something AAA game developers have been chasing for years, haha.

Always cool to see a new player taking the plunge like you have! Sometimes people start out strong, then realize how much of a grind they're in for and quickly lose motivation. Trying out a wide range of content and seeing what sticks, even if your methods aren't always the most efficient, gives you a better sense of what you find most fun. At the end of the day, enjoying the journey is what's most important! That said, of course feel free to ask questions if you need help. Runescape can be extremely overwhelming for a new player, and though you shouldn't always stress efficiency (unless that's how you enjoy playing), it's always good to absorb as much knowledge as you can!

That's really good advice from Kaninka, just FYI. Providing us with pertinent information when asking a question lets us better tailor our answers to you, and keeps the chat moving much more smoothly.

Anyway, I think you'll get the hang of things pretty quickly. 9m cash is pretty exceptional for a week of playtime if you ask me, so I'd say you're already well on your way!

P.S. Don't apologize for writing as much as you did. That was a lovely read, and it's rare to see so much passion go into an intro post!

Hey Sam Courage, welcome to OSRS Advice!

Wow... just wow my friend. I have never read such an in-depth introduction before, I thought that when I signed up and wrote an introduction it was the longest people would have seen but you've swooped right in and smashed that record to pieces haha!

May I say, it was fantastically written and actually really beautiful to read through the steps you've taken in beginning your OSRS adventures. You've definitely got a competitive edge over some players due to being in-sync with how mmorpg's work but the progress you've made so far is fantastic and I am thoroughly looking forward to see how you move forward in the coming weeks and months.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, whilst it's always lovely to see well-seasoned OSRS players making a return to the game and joining our community there is something extra special about welcoming brand new OSRS players to the game and our clan as they start out on their adventures. It's incredibly heart-warming to see you guys hit those shirt and long-term goals either with our without our help and eventually, before you know it, you'll be participating in higher and more advanced level content with the rest of us! Very Happy Very Happy

I echo Dab's sentiment completely, ignore anyone who calls you out if that ever does happen but like you've probably already noticed about the community here we're extremely friendly so if that ever does happen rest assured that a moderator+ will shut it down immediately and deal with the person directly. I'd also be silly not to reciprocate Purp and Syll's advice too with asking as concise questions as possible to make it easier on both sides! Smile

We've got a discord channel where lots of other antics take place, if you feel like joining up and getting involved there to feel an even bigger sense of community then here's the link: https://discord.gg/sxF6Kz

All that's left for me to say is another very warm welcome! I really hope you continue enjoying your time in the game whilst being a part of our clan. My PM is always on if you need anything so don't hesitate to pop me a message anytime. Until then, stay safe, take care and I am really looking forward to seeing you in-game soon!

Best,
Mitch

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!
I was actually pretty embarrassed when I saw the wall of text produced by submitting my post haha. I just got really carried away writing.

As for getting called out for pretending to be new in order to get donations, well... that would have to be a fairly illogical person given that I've already got a decent income stream set up. Happy to buy anything I wind up needing on my own... I could just use some good people to help me learn what I need to buy XD. So no worries, anyone trolling like that isn't going to be able to get under my skin.

I'm really looking forward to getting to the point where I can participate in activities with you all.

And as far as stupid questions go... I dunno, Purple, if anyone's gonna ask a stupid question it will be me. Hell yesterday, shortly before posting my intro here, I asked what the heck 'gz' meant... because everyone was saying it all the time hahaha.

And then someone was talking about elemental runes and I said something to the effect of 'I didn't even know there was an elemental rune.'

Naturally, they explained that they meant air, fire, water, earth...

Naturally...

So yeah... that's me. I'm pretty far from stupid but man I can sure be dumb XD.
