100 Ranarr VS 100 Toadflax Seeds

The purpose of this experiment was to see if Toadflax could compete with Ranarrs in terms of profit for lower level accounts who have not unlocked both of the protected patches and don't get any yield bonuses from diary rewards.

I'm unsure if farming level has any effect on yield; I started farming Ranarrs at 33 and Toadflax around 40.


EQUIPMENT



  • 5 herb Patches (Hosidius patch is protected)
  • Magic secateurs %10 yield increase
  • No Diary rewards that give yield bonus
  • Ultracompost: Reduces the chance of a players crops becoming diseased (1:10 ratio) with a general yield increase of 20% when compared to supercompost. http://oldschoolrunescape.wikia.com/wiki/Ultracompost

STATISTICS


Toadflax profit was 278,745G greater than that of Ranarrs (14%)


Dead Ranarr patches:7
Cured Ranarr patches: 2
Average yield per Ranarr patch: 7.76 Herbs (58,621 GP)

Dead Toadflax Patches:3
Cured Toadflax Patches:2
Average yield per Toadflax patch: 8.17 Herbs (23,487GP)


CONCLUSION

Whilst this was a test with a small sample size and the the 7 dead Ranarr patches effected profits far more than the dead Toadflax patches I'm confident that at low levels Toadflax with it's low investment cost, risk of loss  and most importantly profits make it the better choice.

This is interesting to see. Is the dead ranarr patches due to low level? What I am curious is how much does level affect herb patches survival.

If your level does affect the chance of death it still wouldn't make sense, as Toadflax actually requires a higher level to grow than Ranarr, if it was the case in then you should see more dead Toadflax than Ranarr.

Edit: The profit is mainly due to it only taking 1 herb to pay for a Toadflax seed, dead ranarr's kill your profit.

If I'd only lost 3 Ranarr patches as opposed to the 7 that could of been an extra 234,484GP putting the profit margins much closer, I think it's a symptom of the small sample size. If anyone uses social media and has a twitter account perhaps sending Mod Kieren or Mod Ash a tweet asking if farming levels have any effect on yield or patch survival we'd get an answer.

It is definitely a case of sample size. Just saying that in general if level does affect chance of death then with a bigger sample size Toadflax should die more anyway.

Edit: assuming higher level herbs would be more susceptible to disease. (I have no idea)

they have talked about that on some q&a`s your farming level does effect your yield but i dont think that it affects your survival rate. thats prob just based on the type of compost you use and nothing else.

Such a clean read, very well written experiment, and very valid for people in the low Farming lvls.

Could be interesting if you make the same experiment when you hit lvl 60/70/80/90 Farming, so people can see the difference between lvls for the same seeds Surprised bounce

But if you look at the time stamps it has 2 days difference so short term Ranarr seeds are more profitable, aren't they?

That's just when they got sold, you can't grow 100 all at once so they grew ranarr first and toads second that's all..
